The jobs are based at the Breede/Gouritz operations in Worcester, under the department’s Infrastructure Management: Southern Operations branch. The reference number is 051026/24, and there are five posts on offer at salary Level 02.
What you need to apply
The minimum requirement is an ABET certificate. That’s it as a must-have. A higher qualification helps and counts in your favour, and so does hands-on experience with manual work, but neither is compulsory.
There’s one condition worth flagging up front, though: you have to be able and willing to work in or near rivers, dams, canals and confined spaces. If that’s a problem for you, this isn’t the job.
The department also lists a fair bit of practical knowledge it wants you to have a basic handle on — things like using and looking after equipment, lawn care, pruning and trimming, mixing and diluting chemicals safely, day-to-day machine maintenance, garden and planting work, health and safety procedures, and a basic understanding of government legislation. It also expects some awareness of how the work supports water use and water resource strategy.
What the job actually involves
This is hands-on, physical work across the department’s infrastructure. On any given day you might be loading and offloading furniture, equipment and other goods, cleaning government vehicles, machinery and equipment, or keeping workstations and grounds tidy.
Groundskeeping is a big part of it — cutting lawns, pruning trees, raking and mulching leaves, watering plants and lawns, and looking after sod, plants and trees. You’d also sweep walkways and grounds, and clean buildings, floors included.
Then there’s the heavier side. The role involves repairing tools and structures like buildings, fences and benches around canals, dams and office areas, using both hand and power tools. You’d mix and spread fertiliser with sprayers or spreaders, and pitch in with labouring work supporting the maintenance, repair and construction of departmental infrastructure. That includes helping clean and repair water supply systems such as canals, drains, dams and pipelines, along with repairs to department buildings.
Be ready to travel
One thing to weigh carefully before you apply: you must be willing to work away from home. The advert says the successful candidate will be required to perform duties at all schemes throughout the Western Cape, so this isn’t a stay-in-one-spot job.
